Speaking Openly, John Legend Discussed How He Was “Selfish” In The Beginning Of His Relationship With Chrissy Teigen And How He Evolved Into The Kind Of Partner She Needed.
After over ten years of marriage to Chrissy Teigen, John Legend is finally shedding light on their earlier years. John revealed on a recent edition of the On Purpose With Jay Shetty podcast how he has changed over the course of his relationship with Chrissy and why he first thought of himself as “selfish.”
“Regarding their early relationship, John said, “I guess I was more egotistical then. I wasn’t a terrific partner when we first started dating.”
“Even though I was deeply attracted to her and eager to be with her, I was still selfish,” he continued. I wasn’t quite ready to be the dedicated partner that I am today when I was in my mid-20s.
On the set of John’s music video “Stereo” in 2006, Chrissy and John first connected. Chrissy played the role of his leading lady in the video, and she has retained that role ever since.
The couple were engaged in 2011 and wed in September 2013. Luna, age 6, and Miles, age 4, are the couple’s two children; a third kid is on the way.John continued by being open about his personal growth as a relationship partner and how it led them to where they are now.
“I’m going to do the things that I need to do to be a good partner in this relationship,” he declared. “Once you really figure out that you love someone and you really love so much about them, and you really want to make it work with that person.
And because of that, I’ve simply matured as a person. When you stop being so self-centered and consider your duty and your well-being as well as the pleasure and satisfaction a scenario brings you, you will stop being so selfish.
John went on to say that it takes time to change into the person you really want to be, but fortunately for him, time was on his side. Along the way, he not only gained a better understanding of himself, but he also came to value Chrissy more fully.
